Channel Islands Trip - October 7, 2009 | Movie | Dolphin Movie

These movies and slideshow are from a research trip from the Santa Barbara Harbor to Anacapa Island on NOAA's Channel Island Marine Sanctuary boat called the Shearwater. They includes scuba diving, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History research work and dolphins. When viewing the dolphin clip I find it facinating to hear and see the dolphins swimming, leaping, squealing and taking breaths close off the bow of the boat. It is interesting observing the dolphin behavior that I didn't notice at the time. On our way back to the harbor there was a beautiful sailing event taking place. The Santa Barbara Channel Islands are a wonderful place to visit. I stongly recommend it. Included are Jessie Altstatt and Penny Owens with the Channelkeeper, Chris Mobley and Dani Lipski with the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary and Daniel Geiger with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

Common Dolphin at Channel Islands
Common Dolphin - Channel Islands, June 17, 2009

The following slideshow is from a trip with the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper group and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary people whose boat called the Shearwater was used for the project. This was a collaboration with groups involved with monitoring the area. This particular project was focused on collecting data on eelgrass beds. Volunteers and divers participated in the four day project. Divers were Jessie Altstatt and Penny Owens with the Channelkeeper, Chris Mobley and Dani Lipski with the NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, and Dan Richards from the Channel Islands National Park. Captain Terrence Shinn and Reg the ship's mate helped things to run smothly and volunteers such as Channelkeeper board member Holly Sherwin, Travis Miller and Jennifer LeMay chipped in and enjoyed the experience. These photos were taken from the Santa Barbara harbor to Smugglers Cove on East Santa Cruz Island to North West Anacapa Island and then around to the south side east of Anacapa on June 17, 2009.
