Members of Santa Barbara Audubon and the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition met the Bird Year travelers at Coal Oil Point Reserve. Fifteen-year-old Malkolm Boothroyd, Wendy Boothroyd, and Ken Madsen stopped during their twelve-month bicycle journey from the Yukon to Florida to count birds and share their conservation message.

The group stayed with Bill and Dolores Pollock and presented photographs from their conservation project and travels. Malkolm added the White-faced Ibis at Devereux Slough to his bird list, although the Least Terns appeared to have left the area. Read more about their journey.

Red-necked Phalaropes at Devereux Slough — Coal Oil Point Reserve — August 24 through September 2, 2007 slideshow. Red-necked Phalaropes appeared in record numbers, along with Wilson's Phalarope, Black-bellied Plovers, Forster's Tern, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, and other birds. Devereux Slough is a designated Audubon Important Bird Area.
