Channel Islands trips
These movies and photographs are from a research trip from Santa Barbara Harbor to Anacapa Island aboard the NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary vessel Shearwater. The trip included scuba diving and research work by Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
The dolphin clip captures the animals swimming, leaping, squealing, and breathing close to the bow. On the return to the harbor, a beautiful sailing event was underway. The trip included Jessie Altstatt and Penny Owens with Channelkeeper; Chris Mobley and Dani Lipski with the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary; and Daniel Geiger with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
This trip was a collaboration between Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, aboard the Shearwater. The project focused on monitoring eelgrass beds, with volunteers and divers collecting data between Santa Barbara Harbor, Smugglers Cove, and Anacapa Island.

San Nicolas Island Research — 2007
In February 2007, I was fortunate to participate in a research project at San Nicolas Island. Our trip focused on collecting shoreline data where the land meets the sea. This USGS publication about San Nicolas Island describes related long-term research by Jim Estes and his colleagues on the island’s shallow subtidal kelp forest community.
